主：Welcome to Beijing，Mr．and Mrs．Stone！I am Liu Liansheng from the Foreign Affairs Office．I’ll act as your guide and try my best to make your stay in／visit to Beijing a pleasant one．
宾：How do you do？Mr．Liu，it’s very kind of you to come to meet US at the airport．
主：I hope you’ve had a nice trip．
宾：Well，it was a long but smooth flight and we’ve enjoyed watching the beautiful passing landscape from the plane．
主：Is this your first visit to Beijing?
宾：Oh yes，that's why we’re so excited．In fact，we've been looking forward to the trip for quite a few years．You know，we’ve learned about the splendid civilization of China ever since our childhood，and I understand that Beijing is a city with a very long history.
主：Yes，Beijing is an ancient city with a history of 3,000 years．It was the capital of the kingdom of Yan as early as the 1lth century，B.C.；that's why Beijing is also known as Yanking．Beijing is also a modern young metropolis，with a great number of new constructions，including many skyscrapers and expressways．
宾：Yes，we've been reading about the rapid development of the city and the construction of many magnificent buildings．But I'm an architect and my wife is a history teacher，so we’re naturally more interested in traditional structures and old buildings and their history．
主：Fine，there are many places of historic interest and scenic beauty in Beijing，from the Great Wall，the Imperial Palace(OR the Forbidden City)，the Temple of Heaven，to siheyuan，that is，traditional-style single-story structures(OR houses with rooms around the four sides of a courtyard)，you can see that Beijing has retained a lot of the color of old Chinese life．
宾： Great! My，this is a beautiful boulevard，and look at the bicycles；I’ve never seen so many of them in all my life！If I’m not mistaken，this must be the famous Tian’anmen Square．
主：You’re quite right！Tian’anmen Square covers 40 ha．It is said to be the largest such square in any city in the world．Now look at the Imperial Palace(OR the Forbidden City)on this side of the boulevard，the two carved white marble pillars in front of it are called“cloud pillars”；they are another symbol of Beijing．
宾：What ale those on the top of the pillars?
主：They are two mythical animals，one looking outward and the other looking inward. A legend says that the former is to remind the emperor, when he is out having a good time, to come back and attend to state affairs，and the latter is to remind him，when he stays in the palace all the time，to go out to keep abreast of public feelings．
宾： How very interesting!
主：The Forbidden City(OR The former imperial palace)is at the center of the city．It has a history of more than 500 years．The palace has about／some 10，000 rooms with all area of 720，000 sq．km．It is one of the world’s largest and best preserved ancient buildings．To the south of the square is/stands/towers the Monument to the People’s Heroes，and further south is／can be seen Chairman Mao Memorial Hall．The buildings on the east side of the square are the Museum of Chinese History and the Museum of Chinese Revolution，and that on the west side, the Great Hall of the People，where the National People’s Congress is held。
